Cool Non-Fiction Find!!

I *LOVE* teaching non-fiction during this time of year.
It is absolutely thrilling to watch 5 and 6 year old children research, collect and share facts, use NF text features like bold print and captions, and more!

Click {HERE} to check out a previous post I wrote about how I teach non-fiction.

{Here are other non-fiction posts I have shared}

I just found another AWESOME non-fiction resource that I wanted to share...

LOOK AT THIS!!!

They are all incredibly engaging -
gorgeous photographs
interesting facts
and...
each page can be read by the students - or read to them!

I can't wait to share these with my kindergarten friends!

Follow my non-fiction board to see what other resources inspire my kinders!

Live Bald Eagle Cam

We are busy working on our Non-Fiction unit in Reader's and Writer's Workshop.

The students have been doing an awesome job gathering information, finding and practicing using non-fiction text features, and sharing interesting facts, finds, and resources with their friends.

We've loved observing this eagle.
Kindergarten friends...
there may be another egg! :)

Penguins

We've been diving into some great non-fiction to learn about penguins.

On Friday the students helped me create this Penguin Chart.

We also made these adorable paper penguins.

LOVE THEM... and the little artists who created them! :)

Penguin researchers, here are a few things that I thought you'd like to explore:

Non-Fiction Writing Unit

We just wrapped up our Non-Fiction unit in Writer's Workshop.

I am so proud of the work that my students did during this unit.

They read non-fiction.
They wrote non-fiction.
They know non-fiction.
They love non-fiction.

One thing that I love so much about teaching is that I am always learning.
Every year I am learning how to better teach and challenge my students.

Here are some (new and old) ways that I helped my students learn non-fiction:

Read many, many GREAT non-fiction mentor texts to my students.

Two of my students' favorites include:

and

This Super-Sized animals series is THE PERFECT collection of mentor texts for Kindergarten children. It was THE reason many of my students decided to include glossaries!!

You can check it out here:

I also s-l-o-w-l-y, explicitly taught each non-fiction text feature...

After learning about a feature and locating it in several texts, we had "try-it" time... working specifically on that skill or text feature.

(labeling)

(captions)

(fun facts)

The students really LOVED this and it helped me guarantee that every student had a solid understanding of the choices they could make and features that they could use as a non-fiction writer...
 BEFORE beginning their actual books.

We made a non-fiction penguin book together:

Then the students were ready to research and write on their own.
Many students used our non-fiction book collection or

to collect information.

It was so rewarding to watch their passion and skill grow each week!!
Check out some of their non-fiction writing:

(really, there is nothing on page 4, ha!!!)

I have to give shout out to Dee Dee as I got several new ideas from her.
Her non-fiction post was amazing!

Eagle Update!

We started observing this Bald Eagle back in February. My kindergarten friends loved checking in with the live feed, asking questions, researching bald eagles, and keeping a close eye on mom.

They were SO excited when she laid 3 eggs!

We've been on Spring Break this week, but I am excited to share an update with the students on Monday.
