Celebrating our Writing

We have been hard at work during Writer's Workshop.

During our first five weeks of Kindergarten we focus on drawing.
During this unit we are:

learning about writer's workshop

using a variety of tools

developing on our fine motor skills

studying authors and illustrators and the creative choices they make

learning how to fill the white space

practicing drawing {lines, shapes, people, animals, buildings, and more!}

using details

adding speech bubbles

and more!!

I have done many drawing posts in the past, you can check them out here:

We capture many of our drawings from mini-lessons in our Doodles and Drawings book.
Find that here:

I updated this product over the summer - so there are 2 versions Funky and Kinder friendly.
You can find more on that HERE

I was SO PROUD of my growing writers as they shared what they had learned with their guests at our 1st writing celebration.

They *ARE* listening, woohoo!

We have been studying Mo Willems and we're totally bonkers about Pigeon. We've loved all of his books, especially Pigeon Needs a Bath and Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog.

We had a fun "Hot Dog Party" to celebrate our writing. It was LOVELY to see so many writers curled up with their families around our classroom.

Celebrating Growing Readers and Writers

It is so important to take a little time to celebrate the hard work that students put in everyday.
Last Friday we had 2 (!!!!!) celebrations to celebrate our growth in reading and writing!!

My book lovers club members have been hard at work during reader's workshop.

We've learned:
how to take of books
parts of a book
the 3 ways to read a book
why practicing reading is so important
finding good fit books
and what being a book lover is all about.

We decided to have a Book Lovers Bash to celebrate all of this growth.
Students brought in their favorite books to share with other members. They had discussions at their tables about WHY the book they chose is so great and why it is so special to them.

We also had a special guest reader join us
Mr. Weber read If You Take a Mouse to School and Knuffle Bunny!

He also shared that WE INSPIRED his daughter to start a book lovers club in her neighborhood!!
LOVE!!!!!

Way to go book lovers!

We spent the rest of our bash relaxing and reading.

In the afternoon parents joined us for a Writing Celebration. We celebrated pigeon style with a Hot Dog Party. :)

Here are some fun pics from our celebration:

Studying Mo Willems' Craft

My Growing Writers inspire me daily!

We learned how to be craft detectives - paying careful attention to the choices that authors and illustrators make that help make their writing and illustrations so special.

Here is an anchor chart we created while spotting Mo Willem's choices.

It makes me SO HAPPY and PROUD that my young students are spotting (and using in their own writing) motion, bold words, speech and thought bubbles, and onomatopoeia!

We {heart} Pigeon!

My growing artists are feeling great about their growth in drawing and writing.
I am SO proud of them all!

Check out the beautiful Pastel Pigeons they created after reading all of Mo's (awesome!) Pigeon books.
